The Vines

La Giuva wines are the expression of the territory or ‘Terroir’ of Trezzolano, a small village in the upper Squaranto valley, characterized by a hilly, calcareous terrain, cooled by rolling winds.

Here we mature our native grapes; the Corvina in medium-sized bunches with their characteristic wings (the famous “recie”), the Corvinone, large grapes in loose bunches, the Rondinella, bluish-black, round grapes and Oseleta, characterized by small bunches with great structure and color.

The viticulture is characterized by medium-dense Espalier rows and certified as sustainable organic agriculture.

The Land

The Giuva winery is located in the hills north of Verona, a few kilometers from Lessinia Park. This area is part of the Valpolicella DOC appellation zone, at an altitude of roughly 350 meters above sea level, on the hill which was home to old vineyards in a bio-diverse area of vines, olive and fruit trees, meadows and woods.

It is precisely this aspect, this terroir, which has proven fruitful and rewarded the choices made by the Malesani family.

Here too, in fact, like most of the pre-Alpine hills, both at the very top and on the hillsides, the area is characterized by calcareous soils like the Biancone (a white soil) and the Scaglia Rossa (a reddish soil), characteristics that are a fundamental prerequisite for a choice of crops such as vines and olive trees.

The area where the vines are planted in particular, lies at a crossroads between these soils, although the predominant soil is calcareous, with a strong presence of Lessinia Biancone. The roots have to find their way through the solid or fractured rock – starting at around 80cm – in these fairly deep soils; permeability is moderate, water retention for the roots is low, drainage is good; with active limestone: about 10-13%.

The Vineyards

The vineyards are developed with a predominantly east-west orientation, contrary to the normal north-south orientation typical of the valley. It is this “Esposizione Contraria” (Reverse Aspect), never used in the area until now, that has borne this “exasperated “fruit, with a higher sugar/ alcohol ratio and thus flavor.

As regards the farming system, the Espalier technique is employed to ease the growth of the vines in these rather difficult soils and a sufficient water supply is available for supplemental irrigation.

In terms of mechanical technology, the company is equipped with the best mechanical resources available for the agronomic management of the vineyard, resources that chemical treatment cannot replace: tractors are able to move easily and safely in the crags and slopes, equipped with a range of tools for working the soil.

The spacing is grassed and when required, green-manure cover-crops are utilized.

In short, the challenge to get a perfect balance between the quality of the area and the quality of the grapes (and therefore wine) can now be considered achievable, given the excellent results obtained on both fronts.

The Environmental Choice

In order to strengthen the ideals of respect for the land and the environment, the family Malesani has chosen to embrace the organic culture and, by obtaining ICEA certification, follows the dictates laid down by law and ethical regulations.

Further effort to maintain consistency between the land and agricultural cultivation is the respect for the natural topography, with vineyards that follow the contours of the land where this benefits the environment, or using the “Girapoggio contour plowing system” to meet the hydrogeological and landscape parameters.
