Vines

The vines grow mainly east-west, in contrast to the standard north-south direction typical of the valley. It is a contrasting exposure to date never used in the area, which has created “exasperated” fruits with far higher sugar/alcoholic content. The espalier training system is used to facilitate the growth of the vines in these somewhat difficult soils, assuring the base sufficient water supplies for emergency irrigation.

As far as technology is concerned, the company has equipped itself with the very best mechanical resources for the agricultural management of the vine as chemistry, in this specific case, is unable to help: thus we find tractors able to move safely and easily amidst the crags and slopes with a series of tools to work the land along the rows of vines.

The area between vines is grass covered and green manure is applied from time to time, without burial. It is a perfect blend of quality of territory and quality of grapes and, accordingly, of wines, which has yielded excellent results on both fronts.

Varieties

The Giuva wines are the expression of the territory of Trezzolano, a small settlement in upper Val Squaranto, characterised by hilly, calcareous and well-ventilated terroirs.

Here autochthonous grapes ripen: the Corvina with average-sized bunches and the characteristic wing (referred to locally as “recie”), the Corvinone with its loose-packed bunches and large grapes, the Rondinella with its spherical grapes and bluish-black colour and the Oseleta, characterised by small bunches of great structure and colour.

The vines are grown at medium intensity with espalier training systems and employing certified sustainable organic farming methods.

Terreno

At La Giuva, just like in most of the subalpine reliefs, both towards the summits and on the slopes of the hills, the territory is characterised by calcareous soils like white lime and red flake, features that are an essential prerequisite in choosing crops like vines and olive trees.

The vine-planted area, in particular, falls at a crossways of these soils, even if the predominant presence is the more calcareous terroir with a strong presence of Lessinia white lime.

These soils have a moderately high depth that can be explored by the plant roots with the limits caused by the presence of compact or fractured rock from around 80 cm on. Permeability is moderate with little water capacity available for the plant roots; drainage is good and there is an approximately 10-13% active lime presence.

Environmental choice

To strengthen its ideals of respect for the territory and the environment, La Giuva has chosen to embrace the organic farming culture and, having obtained ICEA certification, duly applies the dictates of the law and ethical rules.

Further effort is made to maintain consistency of territory and agricultural farming with respect for the orographic landscape, with vines following the slopes of the lands where this benefits the environmental conditions in which wine grapes are grown, or grown using the “contour ploughing” system, to respect hydrogeological and landscape parameters.
